As one of the world's largest global energy companies, Shell invests in a wide range of future energy technologies. Their brief to us was to take some of these technologies out of the lab and create real-world applications to demonstrate their potential. Two examples are buses in London powered by used coffee grounds, and a football pitch in Rio powered by footsteps:
The Shell sponsored company, Bio-Bean uses discarded coffee grounds, collected from large coffee chains, to produce energy for home and industrial use. To bring this intriguing technology to the public's attention we used it to power some of London's iconic double-decker buses.
The Shell sponsored company, PaveGen makes kinetic tiles that can harness the energy of footsteps to create useable power. In order to highlight this technology we built a football pitch in Rio which is lit entirely with power from PaveGen tiles.
